What we’re leaving behind and what we’re welcoming in 2023.
Interior design is a dynamic field with certain trends fading from the scene annually, or even seasonally. Today, we are taking a look at the design elements that are phasing out of use from 2022 (and for good reason!) while looking forward to some beautiful trends in 2023 that just make sense.

1. FAREWELL TO THESE 2022 TRENDS
- Fast furniture: It’s cheap and easy to obtain, but shows wear after a few uses. It often breaks and must be repurchased, literally putting the “fill” in “landfill.”
- Signs that state the obvious: You don’t need a sign labeling the bathroom, kitchen, or other space. You just don’t.
- All white kitchens: They had their time in the spotlight, but all that airy white light is giving way to jewel and earth tones and a bevvy of textures.
- Shiplap: It’s unfortunately everywhere and, much like salt, should be used tastefully or it simply spoils the meal.
2. HELLO TO THESE 2023 TRENDS
- Arches: Doorways, ceiling details, window seats — each space can be graced with a well-placed arch.
- Private spaces: Whether a cozy walled lounger or a sound-deafening cubicle seat, privacy seating is on the rise.
- Digital realism: Neon color palettes (from fabric and floors to fixtures) are lighting the way into 2023, a nod to our increasingly digital culture.
- Funghi decor: A little 1970s whimsy is taking over in a big way, from futuristic furniture designs with all the curves to earthy, orange wallpaper. Named after mushrooms, you might see its namesake on more than a few patterns.
3. UP FOR DEBATE
Depending on where you get your design information, you might hear that statement / accent walls are outdated and that what is done on one wall should be done on all walls.
However, other designers believe statement walls are in like never before, largely due to the increased need for a Zoom-worthy background, especially in home offices.
My opinion (so glad you asked) is that certain trends are timeless in certain situations. If you need a statement wall in your office or prefer to have wallpaper on only one wall in your bedroom, go for it.
