Window Treatment Details

That Will Make Your Space Magazine-Worthy

Have you ever looked at your window treatments and wondered why, despite blocking light and being a nice color, they don’t really do much to make your space feel well-designed? There’s a reason for this, and it’s likely one or more of the following:

 • The drapery panels or shades aren’t sized correctly for the window opening
• The pleating or hardware details are lackluster
• The window covering needs another layer to feel finished

Let’s figure out which of these needs best suits your situation and work toward solving it…

1.
Sizing

Big box store drapery panels are often too short and too narrow to hang properly, hence the need for custom panels. Drapery panels should touch the floor or hang no more than an inch off the floor, and the panels themselves should be twice the width of the windows. The drapery rod should be placed 10 inches past the window frame on both sides and 10 inches above the window trim.

If your windows require shades or blinds (most do, as they are often paired with drapery), you’ll be looking instead at precise inside-mount measurements and ways to conceal the mounting hardware, especially if your treatments are motorized.

2.
Layering

A well-designed space will have layered window treatments that add texture and color to the room while fitting in nicely with the surrounding design elements. Drapery panels are a wonderful solution, but are rarely used alone in a professionally designed space. Adding Roman shades, wooden blinds, or honeycomb shades, etc., will make your windows more versatile while providing depth.

3.
Details

Pleating styles, fabric textures and patterns, and hardware designs all play a role in the final result. If you face indecision over pairing the metal hardware finishes with the appropriate fabrics and window treatment styles, you’ll benefit from having custom window treatments.

Not only do I take care of all measurements and installation details, but I also address the cumbersome aspects, such as determining the color palettes, textures, and functionalities — all of which vary greatly from room to room (think: bedroom versus bathroom).

Window Treatments are my specialty, and I’d be honored to help you find the perfect ones that fit you and your space.
