The Difference Between Blinds and Shutters

The Difference Between Blinds and Shutters

Custom Blinds in Atlanta, GA

If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between blinds and shutters, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions we get asked by our clients!  While there are a number of different types of window coverings, blinds and shutters are some of the most common options (in addition to curtains, of course!).  We’ve outlined the difference between the two window covering options below and included a few pictures to help illustrate the difference!

SHUTTERS

When we talk about the difference between shutters and blinds, we are referring to interior shutters.  There are also exterior shutters which were originally constructed to provide privacy, security, and protection from the elements.  However, now-a-days, most exterior shutters are purely decorative.

Interior shutters, on the other hand, are a product that comes with a frame, has an elliptical shape to its louvers (the horizontal slats) and comes in various louver sizes.  They are offered in both wood and composite material and can be painted or stained to match your home.  Shutters are great when you have a drywall cased opening as you can add a decorative frame that mimics window moldings.

Shutters are typically mounted to the window frame and come in a variety of sizes, colors, and materials.  They can be installed in most windows, arches, and doors.  While shutters tend to run more expensive than blinds, their unique structure will add value to your client’s home.

Shutters are a versatile and energy-efficient window covering option.  If your client is interested in privacy, sturdiness and light/air control then shutters might be the perfect solution!

We work directly with some of the best shutter brands – GraberNormanTimber and Lafayette Venetian Blind.  These companies have a wide range of prices and styles so we are able to find the perfect match for your client.

BLINDS

Blinds, when compared to shutters, are a more budget friendly option.  Similar to shutters, they are also offered in wood and composite materials. Their sizes are typically 2 and 2-1/2″ and are a flat slat vs elliptical. Some vendors do offer an elliptical louver to allow you to mix blinds and shutters in the same house but from the road, you would never know the difference. Blinds also can be painted or stained.

Blinds are mounted on the inside of the window frame and do not come with their own frame.  In the past they were typically controlled by a cord that would allow you to pull them up and down.  However, these days you’ll find that most blinds are cordless.  This creates a cleaner look and they are considered much safer for homes with small children.

Blinds also come in many different materials and colors and can be custom matched to your homes trim to create the perfect look!

Knowing the difference between blinds and shutters can help you when speaking with your clients about their options.  While both will allow the homeowner to control the amount of light coming from their windows, the look and price of the two differ.  Educate your clients on the difference between blinds and shutters by sharing this blog post with them!
